Lazybody

by Annie Booth

about

Scottish singer-songwriter Annie Booth returns with her sophomore album ‘Lazybody’. Recorded over the course of several months at studios Chem19 and Green Door, the 11-track record takes the alt-folk artist’s compositions to ambitious new heights, with production by frequent collaborator and acclaimed producer Chris McCrory.

Though ten of the eleven songs were written long before the pandemic, they unwittingly deal with isolation and inertia and losing direction. Over the course of the record, these conditions are tempered with love and rekindling fire as well as a quiet acceptance of what cannot be controlled.

With acoustic guitar and piano at its core, the record is layered with a variety of lush arrangement, moving from the sinister to the beautiful, from calm to restless. The vocals echo these shifts, at times adorned with stacked harmonies and at others left raw and vulnerable.

‘Lazybody’ was released on 12" vinyl, 3x colour vinyl, CD and digital on 19th November 2021 via Last Night From Glasgow.

Cocoon slinks its way into existence, with its restrained piano, creeping percussion and shimmering strings. By the finale it has truly unfurled, triumphant and proud in spite of its lyrical questioning.

Soho echoes creative days and evenings spent in London, chased by life’s bigger uncertainties. Sweeping strings drift over elegant piano and a close, lamenting vocal.

Nowhere ushers in gritty acoustic, drums and electric, evoking a wasteland of wasted opportunities and ghosts that won’t leave you be. The pedal steel and percussion shake and howl through the track, with the vocals growing ever more intense.

Ruby is sweet and sad, with organ, synths and celestial harmonies swathing the track. It looks through the eyes of a lady with dementia, showing us her everyday experiences and memories.

Nightvan features spoken word atop ethereal sounds and production.

Tropic moves slowly and hopefully, gently building in power and stature as the track goes on. Warm bass and drums, male backing vocals and soaring pedal steel meet lush strings.

Wave is calm and nostalgic, with its layering harmonies underpinning an assured vocal. The band gently support the track through to its conclusion.

Collector rises and falls in and out of time signatures, lifting with strings one moment and closing into intimate vocals and piano another. The song muses over regrets, what it means to be ‘original’ and the desire to fully accept oneself.

Valley careers forward with purpose, returning to rough acoustic guitar sounds and a crashing full band as it nears its dynamic conclusion.

Embers is stripped back and understated, with emotive vocals delicately holding over synth, piano and guitar.

Fallow Year – carrying a lyrical refrain that repeats almost like a mantra – closes the album, fully acoustic and exposed.
